---------
Born in San Leandro, California, American painter Edward Borein quickly earned recognition for his artistry. As a cowboy, he documented daily life across the West, finding significant inspiration, especially during late 1890s trips to Mexico. It was then he began experimenting with watercolor, showcasing his mastery as both a draftsman and colorist through washes and layering. Borein later moved to New York, becoming a skilled printmaker after studying at the Art Students League. Here, he developed a close friendship with Charles Marion Russell and connected with artists like Thomas Moran, Carl Oscar Borg, and Frank Tenney Johnson. This exposure broadened his audience, who valued his authentic depictions of Plains life and deep respect for Native American subjects. A self-taught artist, Borein's exceptional watercolor achievements secured his place among the West's pioneering artists.
