----------
Born in Pierce City, Idaho, in 1878, E. W. "Bill" Gollings spent his early life across New York, Idaho, and Michigan before his family settled in Chicago when he was twelve. At nineteen, he ventured to South Dakota and Nebraska, working as a sheepherder and cowboy, experiences that would profoundly influence his art, alongside his admiration for Frederic Remington's work. Around age twenty-five, a set of mail-order paints sparked his artistic career, leading to a scholarship at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Returning to Wyoming, Gollings resumed cowboy work on a Cheyenne reservation while further developing his art, becoming proficient in etching under Hans Kleiber's guidance. In 1909, he built a studio in Sheridan, Wyoming, dedicating himself to painting Western scenes and signing his works with "Gollings" and a pony-track symbol, though he occasionally supplemented his income with ranch work. Bill Gollings passed away in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1932, at age 54.
