Ace Powell was an American artist famous for his detailed scenes of the Western United States. He depicted the rough riding of cowboys, the majestic lifestyle of Native Americans, and the distinctive wildlife roaming the plains through his realistic paintings, prints, and sculptures. Born Asa Lynn “Ace” Powell on April 3, 1912 in Tularosa, NM, the prolific artist was largely self-taught, but did take several lessons in his youth with Charles Marion Russell. With his mentor, Powell developed his signature—an Ace of Diamonds. He studied at the University of Montana through the G.I. Bill in the early 1940s and continued to reside in the state until his death on January 25, 1978 in Kalispell, NM.
