How to Use Safely
-
Isolate the Paw: Hold your dog’s paw securely but gently. Clear away any excess fur surrounding the claws to ensure you have complete visibility of the target nail.
-
Locate the Quick: Identify the "quick" (the internal blood vessel inside the nail). On light-colored nails, it appears as a pink inner core. On dark nails, the quick is obscured; work in very small, incremental trims to remain safe.
-
Position the Guard: Ensure the built-in safety guard is positioned behind the nail to help gauge a safe cutting distance.
-
Cut at a 45-Degree Angle: Insert the tip of the nail into the trimmer opening and cut at a slight $45^\circ$ angle, following the natural downward growth curvature of the claw.
-
Trim Incrementally: Take off small amounts at a time. If the center of a dark nail starts to display a small, dark dot, stop immediately, as you are approaching the quick.
⚠️ Veterinary & Grooming Safety Disclaimer: Trimming a pet's nails requires precision and care. Accidentally cutting into the quick can cause discomfort and temporary bleeding. Always keep a styptic powder or cornstarch close at hand to quickly stop bleeding if the quick is nicked. If your dog exhibits severe anxiety, struggles aggressively during paw handling, or has severely overgrown claws, consult a professional groomer or your veterinarian to ensure safe maintenance.
