Founded in Solingen, Germany around 1840, Otter-Messer began in a traditional water-powered grinding shop known as a "Kotten". The company was established by the Berns brothers and took its name from the fish otters that once lived along the banks of the local streams in the Bergisches Land region. For over 180 years, Otter-Messer has maintained a reputation for producing robust, handcrafted pocket knives that embody the prestigious "Made in Solingen" heritage.

Under the leadership of Frank Rommel since 2011, the manufactory continues to produce its famous classics, such as the Mercator and Anchor knives, using traditional methods that can involve up to 180 individual work steps per blade. Otter-Messer is defined by its commitment to functional simplicity, utilizing premium materials like C75 carbon steel, Böhler N690 steel, and natural handles made of smoked oak, bone, and buckhorn.
