Jerry Cates was a renowned Western craftsman and contemporary spur maker based in Amarillo, Texas. Born in 1938 in Foard County, he grew up in a ranching family and spent his early years as a cowboy and brand inspector before transitioning into the world of bit and spur making.

- Artistic Beginnings: In the early 1960s, while working on a Texas Panhandle ranch, Cates began repairing bits and spurs for fellow cowboys. He completed his first pair of spurs in 1969.
- Influences: He was deeply influenced and mentored by the legendary Adolph Bayers, whose shop was located near his own. His work was also inspired by the Texas patterns of McChesney and Crockett.
- Full-Time Mastery: He launched his full-time business in 1979/1980, eventually developing 150 different styles for spurs and 40 patterns for bits, with every piece being hand-engraved.
