Born in Foard County, Texas, Jerry Cates (1938–2011) was a legendary Amarillo-based spur maker who transitioned from a life of cowboying and brand inspecting to master craftsmanship in 1969. Greatly inspired by the nearby Adolph Bayers, Cates developed a highly sought-after Texas style that blended traditional patterns with his own unique artistic flair. His prestigious career was marked by being named the 1997 AWA Spur Maker of the Year and receiving the inaugural Adolph Bayers Memorial Award in 2007. As the founder of the Texas Style Bit and Spur Makers group and a generous mentor through his apprenticeship program, Cates left a lasting legacy on the art of western heritage.
