--------

R. Farrington Elwell, born in 1875, was one of the first artists to be employed by Buffalo Bill Cody. He began working for Cody in 1899, initially assisting in various capacities on Cody's Wyoming ranches while also pursuing his artistic career. Though Elwell was largely self-taught, his association with Cody allowed him to gain exposure and develop his skills in western illustration. Elwell's works primarily depicted action scenes involving horses and the Wild West, and while his efforts never reached the artistic heights of figures like Frederic Remington, Cody helped him with opportunities and commissions throughout their friendship. Elwell's lasting legacy includes his illustrations, paintings, and work as a commercial artist, especially in the western genre.
