Till Goodan (1896–1958) was a true cowboy artist, raised on ranches in California where he honed both his roping skills and his eye for Western life. After working as a cowboy and mule packer, he turned to art full time in 1917, studying under respected California painters and later working in commercial art. His most iconic work includes illustrations for Gene Autry comic books and designs for Wallace China’s famed Western dinnerware, including the “Rodeo” pattern. Goodan’s deep authenticity stemmed from firsthand experience, making his work benchmarks of the Western genre. He died doing what he loved—serving as Grand Marshal at a rodeo, on horseback.
