How to Measure for Chaps : A Step-by-Step guide from Teskey’s

How to Measure for Chaps : A Step-by-Step guide from Teskey’s

If you're in the market for a new pair of chaps, Teskey’s Saddle Shop is your ultimate destination. We offer an extensive selection of chaps and chinks, ranging from traditional woolies and sleek shotgun styles to rugged batwing and high-performance rodeo designs.

Whether you need heavy-duty protection for the brush, a polished look for the show arena, or a comfortable layer for daily ranch work, the right gear makes all the difference. Beyond just style, chaps and chinks provide essential grip in the saddle and a critical barrier against the elements. However, the key to performance is the fit. To ensure you ride with maximum comfort and mobility, it is vital to ensure your pair aligns correctly with your specific measurements.

How to Measure for Your Perfect Pair

Because chap sizing differs significantly from standard jean sizes, precise measurements are essential for a good fit. Before you begin, grab a flexible measuring tape and put on the boots and jeans you plan to ride in. For the most accurate results, we recommend having a friend help you with these six key measurements:

  • Outseam: Start at the top of your belt line and measure down to the floor. We recommend adding two inches to this number to account for the "ride up" that naturally occurs when your knees are bent in the saddle.

  • Inseam: Measure from the highest point of your inner thigh (the crotch) down to the floor.

  • Thigh: Wrap the tape around the widest part of your thigh. This is often considered the most critical measurement for a comfortable, non-restrictive fit.

  • Knee: Measure the circumference around your knee.

  • Calf: Measure around the widest part of your calf.

  • Waist: Finally, measure around your waist exactly where you want the chaps to sit. Keep in mind that many western chaps are highly adjustable at the waist with buckles or laces.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Fit

  • Stand Straight: Keep your weight evenly distributed on both feet while being measured.

  • Snug but Not Tight: The measuring tape should be firm against your body but not digging into your skin.

  • Between Sizes? If your thigh measurement falls between sizes, it is usually best to go with the larger size to ensure you maintain full mobility.

Finding the right pair of chaps or chinks is about more than just a great look—it’s about ensuring comfort and performance every time you step into the stirrup. Since these pieces are an investment in your riding gear, taking the time to get accurate measurements will ensure a fit that feels like it was made just for you. If you have any questions about sizing or need help choosing between styles, the team at Teskey’s is always here to help.
